A Tree for Mom – A Mother’s Day Tribute in Aqua and Love

Some people give flowers.

Some people send cards.

I built a whole tree.

This isn’t your typical Mother’s Day gesture, but then again—my mom isn’t typical. She’s a force of kindness, strength, and sparkle. So, I created a Mother’s Day tree in her honor, filled with color, whimsy, and one very important detail:

Aqua.

Aqua is her favorite color—bright, calming, powerful, and alive. It’s the color of ocean waves and open skies. It reminds me of her spirit—grounded and wild all at once. So, this tree isn’t red and pink like tradition might suggest… it’s aqua, teal, turquoise, and every shade in between. Because that’s her. And that’s what this tree is about.

It’s decked with florals, glittery baubles, and little ice cream cones (because why shouldn’t joy look like dessert?). Ribbons swirl like laughter, butterflies hover like blessings, and every ornament whispers “Mom, you’re the best” in its own sparkly language.

This is more than decoration. It’s devotion. It’s grief. It’s celebration. It’s memory.

It’s me honoring the woman who taught me how to love and how to create, how to be soft and fierce, how to stay standing even when life knocks you sideways.

And you know what? Sitting next to it, I feel her. I feel like I’m giving something back.

If you’re missing your mom this Mother’s Day, or if you’re a mom doing your best to hold it all together—this tree is for you, too. A reminder that love can be expressed in a thousand glitter-covered, ribbon-wrapped ways. It doesn’t have to follow rules. It just has to be true.

So here’s to moms. To color. To creating something beautiful when words just aren’t enough.

And of course…

Here’s to aqua. 💙

With Love,

Dana Overland, Artist & Founder of Dove Recovery Art

I paint emotions. Not places, not things — but all the messy, beautiful, gut-wrenching, glittering feelings we carry. My art was born from survival: after years battling chronic pain, deep grief, and trauma, I found healing in watercolor and mixed media. Every piece I create is a surrender, a whispered prayer, and a story hidden in color and texture.

Through Dove Recovery Art, I turn pain into something soft and luminous — because even pain glitters when you hold it right. My work explores trauma, recovery, and the quiet power of starting over. Proceeds from my art help others on the same path: funding recovery efforts, community support, and creative healing spaces.

I believe art isn’t just something to look at; it’s something to feel, to carry, to heal with. Welcome to my world — where broken things become beautiful.
